The 5 Senses
- You see me and you think I’m dark, bold, secretive and harsh because I wear black and I keep to myself and I study everything, all of the time. But you don’t know that I’m just waiting for the right people to set me free from the gravity I’ve placed on myself. That my favorite color is yellow because it makes me feel light and warm and free.
--You hear me speak and think that I’m too serious because I don’t joke around, or like to dance at parties; and I don’t know how to make small talk, so I don’t. But you’ve never seen what it’s like in my house on a Sunday afternoon - music blasting, duster swaying, and hips moving as I hit low and high notes no one has ever heard from me before.
--- You think I’ll smell like your escape. Like someone you can dive right into to wipe away your past, to remind you of a future with riches and royalty. But if you get close enough, you’ll realize that I am a fresh set of linens waiting to be a part of someone’s home.
---- You touch me and think I’ll feel soft and smooth but I have rough edges, just like you. And I have wounds from all of the wars I’ve fought.
----- You envision me and think I’ll taste like your worst nightmare wrapped up in an exotic bow. But I have a heart too bold and too bright to be tarnished and left stranded by temporary hunger. I’m not a drink on a Friday night, I am the entire bottle. I’m not a portion or a serving of any one thing, I am the whole home-cooked meal waiting to satiate the mouth that deserves me.
